How to make your own Homemade Butter

Most people don’t realize how easy it is to make your own homemade butter, but It’s really quite simple.

The Science behind Butter Making

Butter is made by agitating milk. When milk is agitated for a long period of time, the milk fat globule membranes that encase the fats are broken. This causes the fats to clump together, and separate from the buttermilk. So your goal when making butter, is to break the membrane that encases the fat and separate the fat from the buttermilk.

Back in the good ol days, you had to use a butter churn to do this. But a butter churn requires a lot of work to manually agitate the cream, and who wants to do that. Instead you can just use a blender. It’s much easier, and works quite well.

What you need:

– A blender

– Cream

– Cup of Ice water

– Salt (optional)

One Step for Making Butter

Pour the cream in the blender, and turn it on. The blender will whip the cream in to whipping cream. When it turns to whipping cream keep blending. After awhile, the cream will break and turn into butter. The whole process takes about 5-10 minutes. You will know when the cream turns to butter because the butter clumps up, and separates from the liquid. After the cream turns to butter, you can drain the buttermilk, and viola you made your own butter.

Optional Step- Keep you Butter Fresh

To keep you butter fresh longer, you can wash it with ice water. After draining the buttermilk, pour some ice water in the blender, and blend a few more minutes. This washes the butter, and makes it last longer.

Salted vs. Unsalted

You can also add salt to the cream if you want salted butter. If you don’t add salt, your butter will be unsalted. I made mine without salt, and it was really good.

  1. I tried to make some a while ago by skimming cream off the milk but it didn’t work so well. Was talking to someone about it the other night so am determined to try again (think I didn’t leave the milk to stand for long enough) once the cows start calving.
    Well done

    • Ya, I was going to try to skim our milk and make it, but I wanted everyone to be able to make it. I used whipping cream which is about 35% fat. Regular milk has only about 3.75% fat so when you skim you milk, you really need to skim a lot in order to get enough cream. I think it will work quite well for you next time though. The cow’s milk usually has a higher fat content after freshening. Let me know how it turns out 🙂

  2. Wondering how to make cream out of milk? Some keep scooping fat layer when boiled the milk to get cream. Is that a way to go to get cream?

    • When your milk settles, the cream will naturally rise to the top. You can then just skim it off. Or you can look into a cream seperator. there are mechanical devices that can also skim your milk
